De Zaansche Molen (Society of Zaan Windmills) is the owner of 13 historic industrial windmills and the Windmill Museum. They are spread over the entire Zaan region. Seven are located at the Zaanse Schans. We invite you to take a journey through time and visit our mills. Here you can take a virtual 360 degrees walk to our new Windmill museum.

The museum was opened in 1928 to share knowledge about and love for the industrial mills. The collection has been brought together by the Zaanse population. Perhaps the Molenpanorama is the most important property of the museum. This enormous painting of 11 by 2 meters gives a picture of the east side of the Zaan around 1800, all 53 windmills.

The Zaan Windmill Society was founded in 1925 to preserve the last remaining windmills in the Zaan region, an area which once had more than 1000 windmills dotting the landscape. Their first successful restoration was De Zoeker oil mill. To date, they have now restored a total of 12 windmills in the Zaan area, many of which are open to the public.

Built by the Pioche Mines Company in the 1920s, this aerial tramway carried ore from the mines, down Treasure Hill, eventually delivering its payloads to the Godbe Mill at the base of town. It was an ingenious operation; the weight of the ore in the buckets headed to the mill was enough to pull the empty buckets all the way back up the hill.
